Beach volleyball: Varadero will host the second leg of Norsica Circuit

The second stage of the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit will take place in the Cuban tourist resort of Varadero, in the north of the province of Matanzas, from 6 to 8 May, with the participation of male and female pairs from 11 countries.

according to Al Jazeera Sports MediaRepresentatives from Canada, the United States, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Jamaica and Saint Kitts and Nevis are participating in the competition.

The same reports add that all 27 participating representatives – 12 female and 15 men – should arrive in Cuba as of next Wednesday, May 4, and the technical meeting will take place the following day.

Cuba will compete with couples of each gender. For the women, Olympians Leila Martinez and Lidani Echevarria will step in, as well as Dayani Zerqueira and Amanda Armenteros.

In the men’s branch, the island will be represented by the duo Noslyn Diaz and Jorge Luis Alaio, the winners of the first stage of Norsica, which was held last weekend in Aguascalientes, Mexico. In addition, Yousfani Carrasco and Miguel Angel Ion will compete.

The tourist resort of Varadero, located about 140 kilometers east of Havana, hosted this circuit from 2011 to 2019, respectively, but the health emergency imposed by COVID-19 in the past two years forced the suspension of these events.

However, event organizers are fully confident in its success, star volleyball player and current vice-president Mireya Lewis explained to the JIT website.

“We are very optimistic that everything will go well. There is valuable experience for people who have many years in this event and alternatives are always sought in the face of difficulties. The important thing is that all participants feel at home.”
