Personalization on Android devices is an important part of the appeal of these products, although the ability to change the wallpaper and fonts of smartphones or tablets is not the only customizable options. Choosing a theme is also a way for users to customize their devices.

However, the ability for people to modify the appearance of their device’s screens brought with it a new challenge: making on-screen applications preserve the harmony and aesthetics displayed. With the new Android 13 update, more and more apps will tweak their icon for this reason.

This functionality is also available in the current version of the Android operating system, but in a limited way because when changing the theme (wallpapers and screen colors), some apps changed their appearance depending on the device on which it was made. Google apps change only on Pixel devices, Samsung apps only change on Samsung devices.

Although this idea, called Material Design, was first launched on devices in 2014 with Android 5.0, it won’t change its appearance until version 13 of the operating system. Among them are WhatsApp, Telegram and Spotify, as reported by 9to5google media. They join:

Signal, Microsoft Edge, Beeper, Opera Browser, American Express, ESPN, Fotmob, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Pocket, Reddit and many more. In total, there are around 49 third-party apps that will have the ability to tweak their appearance in the new Android 13 update.
