With this certification, Parks Canada now has 12 approved dark sky locations.
In addition to improving night sky visibility, the certification increases awareness of light pollution and reduces energy consumption, according to the service.
Certification also provides environmental benefits. Artificial light harms nocturnal animals because different species need darkness to feed, mate and migrate.
Although scientists have tools and technology to study the sky and its treasures that previous research did not have along historyLight pollution makes it difficult, if not prevented.
In 2016, a study Published in Science Advances It revealed that most American and European citizens could not see the Milky Way at night due to artificial light.
