Croatia takes a big step towards Davis Cup quarter-finals, Canada qualified

Croatia, who reached the Davis Cup final last year, took a big step towards the quarter-finals with their victory on Saturday against Argentina (3-0), who were eliminated, while Canada qualified despite losing to Serbia (2-1).

Croatia, who reached the final of the 2021 edition against Russia, achieved their second win in a row, after their victory over Sweden (2-1) on Thursday, beating Argentina 3-0, and the surprise winner in Cincinnati, Borna Coric (26), And contribute a victory point in the second individual.

After a tough defeat at the start against Italy (3-0), Croatia knew how to act despite the absence of Marin Cilic (No. 16 in the world), to come close to qualifying, ahead of Italy and Sweden on Sunday.

A day after beating Spain led by world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Canada secured their ticket to the quarter-finals, despite their 2-1 defeat to Serbia.

After beating Alcaraz the day before, Felix Auger-Aliassime (13th in the world), who is still in good shape, made his team qualify by defeating Miomir Kekmanovic (33), 6-3, 6-4.

Canada made sure to take first and second places in Group B.

Winning the double, due to Vasek Pospisil’s retirement due to a knee injury, Serbia won the match, keeping very few chances of qualifying. Therefore, he will need a win for South Korea, who have already been eliminated, on Sunday over Spain.

In Group C, the two seeds, Germany and Australia, were already known on Friday. In the confrontation between the last two of the group, France beat Belgium (2-1), achieved its first victory and took third place in the group.

The two qualified for the quarter-finals, and Germany and Australia will meet on Sunday to determine their final classifications.

Within the fourth group, the Netherlands, who were not a candidate in their group before the competition, finally took the lead after beating the United States (2-1).

The two, undefeated before this match, were already finished, but the first place gives the opportunity for the Dutch to take on a more friendly opponent.
