Pink Floyd – Pigs on the Wing (Parts 1 & 2)

“the animals” It is a concept album focusing on the social and political conditions of Britain in the mid-1970s and was a departure from the band’s previous style of work.

The album was developed from a collection of songs unrelated to a concept describing the apparent social and moral decay of society, comparing the human condition with that of animals.

Inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the album depicts different classes of people as animals with pigs at the top of the social chain descending to sheep as a stray flock that follows what they are told. Then dogs are like bosses. It’s a company that’s getting fat with the money and power it has over other companies.

The popular album cover shows an inflatable pig (now known as Algee) floating between two smokestacks at a Battersea power station, designed by Roger Waters and designed by Storm Thorgerson, a longtime collaborator at Hipgnosis Studios.

For this new edition, artwork has been reimagined for the modern era by Storm’s partner at Hipgnosis, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell.

By taking new shots of the building as it appeared during recent conversion work, Po experimented with new angles and produced some stunning new shots of the classic original.

Aubrey Powell explains: “Because the original 1977 album cover was such a distinct, stand-alone piece of art, I had the opportunity to update it, which was a very daunting task, but Hipgnosis took the opportunity to reshoot the image to reflect the change.”
