Mexico City. The Mexican government will use a panel of experts to settle its differences regarding the United States’ interpretation of the application of rules of origin in the auto sector in the North American Trade Agreement, the T-MEC, three sources with knowledge of the matter said, and published Reuters.
In August, Mexican authorities asked the United States to initiate formal consultations on what they consider to be a stricter application of these rules to vehicle producers, and thus, contrary to what was agreed in the agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Subsequently, Canada acceded to the Latin American country’s application, which represents the first non-controversial phase of the State-State Dispute Resolution Mechanism set forth in Chapter 31 of the TMEC.
Reuters noted that Mexico’s Economy Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
If the parties fail to resolve the dispute after 75 days of submission, the commission’s appeal is the step provided in the treaty to resolve the dispute. The deadline is about to expire in the first week of November.
