Caracas, June 16 (EFE). Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Wednesday thanked Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau for his support after a virtual meeting with the North American country’s foreign affairs chief.
“I spoke with Foreign Minister Marc Garneau and thanked Canada for supporting the Venezuelan democratic cause,” Guaido said on Twitter. “The support of the international community is key to achieving a national rescue agreement.”
This Tuesday, Canada’s foreign minister wrote on the same social network that he spoke with the Venezuelan opposition and emphasized that “Canada stands firmly in its support of the democratic aspirations and human rights of the Venezuelan people.”
Garneau added that “Canada is committed to working with international partners to resolve the crisis in Venezuela.”
In May, Guaido announced his readiness to negotiate with the government of President Nicolas Maduro to reach what he called a “national rescue agreement” in order to overcome the crisis in Venezuela.
The opponent aspires to hold “free” and “fair” general elections, and Maduro responded to the proposal, saying he was ready to meet with “all the opposition”, but demanded the lifting of international sanctions before sitting down for dialogue.
These penalties are used by the opponent as a bargaining chip depending on how the dialogue progresses.
So far, there is no date for the two parties to come to the negotiating table to start negotiations.
On Thursday, Canada is organizing an international conference in solidarity with more than 5 million Venezuelan immigrants aimed at increasing the visibility of the crisis and achieving a donation figure similar to the $653 million in aid reached in 2020.
At the previous meeting, convened by Spain and the European Union (EU) with the support of the United Nations Refugee Agency (Unhcr) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the international community committed $2.790 million in contributions. , of which 653 million donations.
The aim of the conference, which will take place around tomorrow due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic and which will be attended by representatives from about 60 countries around the world, is to reach a similar number of donations. EFE
