During a campaign stop in New Hampshire, Biden shocked the crowd when he claimed he would consider nominating a Republican to be his 2020 running mate.
A woman told former Vice President Biden, “Our 21-year-old son said the other night, ‘I wonder if Joe Biden would consider choosing a Republican as a running mate.'” She also claimed Biden would need to “pull out all the stops” to beat President Trump if he wins the Democrat primary.
Joe Biden quickly responded, “The answer is I would, but I can’t think of one now.”
“Let me explain that. You know there’s some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here’s the problem right now… they’ve got to step up,” Biden continued.
The mysterious nameless Republican is just one of many potential “running mates” that Barack Obama’s former VP has teased. He also named both Senator Elizabeth Warren, a current Democrat frontrunner, and Kamala Harris, who already dropped out, as potential running mates.
Joe Biden even spoke with Kamala Harris about the potential VP nomination following her exiting the primary. Biden told reporters in Iowa “I talked to her yesterday. She is solid. She can be president someday herself. She can be the vice president. She can go on to be a Supreme Court justice. She can be an attorney general. She has enormous capability.”
No matter who Joe Biden picks to be his Vice Presidential running mate, he first needs to manage to beat Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Pete Buttigieg, all of whom occasionally outpoll Biden in key states.
