The first episode of The Mandalorian aired on Tuesday, and I am hooked. It may not be the most exciting start for those who are new to Star Wars, but if you’ve seen any of the moves, games, or animated series, this is a heck of a treat.
Pedro Pascale makes a strong start as the main protagonist (whose name he revealed in an interview on Tuesday) by keeping a stoic profile and letting his actions speak louder than his words. With minimal dialogue, the episode does a lot of showing-not-telling of the state of the Outer Rim. Through the characters and a couple choice shots, it explains that the current setting of The Mandalorian–like many of the desert planets we’ve seen in Star Wars movies–is a harsh place with few resources to go around.
As such, people are forced to make choices in order to survive. In our main Mando’s case, the choice to pursue bounties and make whatever credits he can is a no-brainer, but his latest commission–and the decision he is about to make–may set off a series of events that will shake up the Star Wars universe as we know it.
It’s certainly worth watching if you’ve ever wondered about Mandalorians, are curious about the timeline leading up to The Force Awakens, or just enjoy the Star Wars universe in general. We’ve only met a handful of characters as of yet, but they’ve each been intriguing in their own way, and we can’t wait to find out more.
The Mandalorian is now streaming exclusively on Disney+, and will be airing on Fridays beginning this week.
