The US Pentagon released new footage on Wednesday of the Delta Force raid that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The video released by the Pentagon shows not only the gunboat strikes on the compound but also the moment that Delta Force members raided it.
On Saturday night, ISIS leader al-Baghdadi was killed during a United States military raid on an ISIS compound. According to a statement by President Donald Trump, al-Baghdadi was chased down by trained dogs through tunnels before he detonated his suicide vest and killed himself and his 3 children.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been number one on America’s most wanted list, with a bounty of $25 million on his head. He was allegedly sold out when the United States captured and interrogated one of his wives and an ISIS courier.
The Islamic State had previously been a leg of the Taliban before al-Baghdadi’s takeover of the organization. He made the group even more radical before capturing huge swathes of Iraq and Syria and declaring them the Islamic Caliphate.
Al-Baghdadi had claimed to be the Caliph, a direct descendant of the Islamic prophet Mohammed. It is alleged that Mohammed had no direct descendants and instead gave his legacy to either a family member or a top general, depending on the form of Islam practiced.
President Donald Trump has been criticized for the “disrespectful” language he used while describing the deal of the ISIS leader. Trump said that al Baghdadi died “like a dog” and “like a coward”. He also did not disclose the raid to any Democrats until after it was over.
Despite these criticisms, the raid on al-Baghdadi was considered very successful. No Americans died and they got all of their targets. The United States also took out al-Baghdadi’s replacement shortly after he was named.
