John ‘Pops’ Witherspoon Passes Away at Age 77

Beloved TV father-figure John Witherspoon suddenly passed away in his home in Sherman Oaks, California, on Tuesday. His family wrote:

” It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away. He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you “POPS” always & forever.”

An outpouring of condolences and tributes have been paid to the late actor, who began as a stand-up comedian and eventually became known for his role as Ice Cube’s dad in the Friday franchise. He went on to voice Grandad Freeman for the animated cult series Boondocks, and starred as Shawn and Marlon Wayans’ dad Pops in The Wayans Bros. Off-screen, he was a respected mentor and role model to his fellow comedians and actors, especially in the Black community.
