President Trump announced on Sunday that founder and leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) Abu Bakr Al- Baghdadi died in a raid by U.S. special operations troops on Sunday.
“Last night, the United States brought the world’s number one terrorist leader to justice,” the president announced. “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead.” Watch the chilling speech below.
The president said that he watched the raid from the White House Situation Room alongside the secretary of defense and top military and national security officials.
Trump said that U.S. forces fought for two hours before al- Baghdadi fled to a tunnel with three of his children. As U.S. operators and K-9 chased him, al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest and killed himself and his children.
Trump said that Baghdadi was “whimpering and crying and screaming all the way” and “he died like a dog, he died crying.”
“He didn’t die a hero, he died a coward,” Trump continued.
Trump said that no one U.S forces were lost in the operation and only a canine unit was hurt in the raid.
U.S. forces confirmed al-Baghdadi’s identity with DNA tests at the scene. His body was buried under rubble and badly mutilated, according to Trump. A “large number” of fighters were killed alongside the ISIS leader.
“Baghdadi and the losers who worked for him, and losers they are, they had no idea what they were getting into. In some cases, they were very frightened puppies,” the president said. “He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is now a much safer place. God bless America.”
Trump did not tell congressional leaders about the raid, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, beforehand because of fears of it leaking publicly and putting troops in harms way.
