Christianity has always been a central part of Kanye West music. He made his name with “Jesus Walks,” a song that had clubs go wild in the name of Jesus.

He has always shown himself a sinner that believed in scripture. He was a heathen that held God close. Watch the short film by Kanye West titled Jesus Is King below.

Here is the break down of the album track-by-track.

Track 1: Every Hour

The intro track to the album starts out with a live Sunday Service choir singing about praising the Lord every single “second” and even “ever millisecond.” This is some classic gospel and definitely sounds like it was filmed live. Great uplifting beginning to the album and sounds great when the record is played on repeat.

Track 2: Selah

Selah is usually means to praise and is found in the Book of Psalms. Lauryn Hill named her daughter this. This song sounds like a classic Kanye track in the beginning with the drums but quickly focuses on the incredible singing of the choir singing Hallelujah. Features several biblical references throughout.

The song features a sample from “Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory” and can be heard below.

Great voice composition at the end of the song.

Track 3: Follow God

This one sounds like a classic soul-chopping Kanye west track and quickly moves into a solid rap. He talks about himself and an interaction with his father. Great soul sample from “Can You Lose By Following God” by Whole Truth cut in Memphis, Tennessee.

Track 4: “Closed On Sunday”

Track starts out with a nice guitar line before a choir sings underneath it. Kanye half sings, half raps and it is actually really pretty until the bass kicks in.

Best line: “You’re my number one, with the lemonade.”

This track has been going viral for its reference to the fast food chicken restaurant Chick-Fil-A.

Track 5: “On God”

Track starts out with a nice guitar line before a choir sings underneath it. Kanye half sings, half raps and it is actually really pretty until the bass kicks in.

Pierre Bourne on the track and this one has a big synth-driven sound.

Notable lines: “Before the ranch, I had horses in the garage.”

Life going to have some lows and some highs.

Track 6: “Everything We Need” feat. Ty Dolla $ign and Ant Clemons

Ty Dolla $ign does a brilliant piece of multi-tracked vocals before Kanye raps.

Notable Lines: “What if Eve made apple juice.”

This one is easy to sing along to and adds Kanye’s touch to church music.

Track 7: “Water” feat. Ant Clemons

Water is a light little diddy that opens up with a choir singing about water.

The sample is from Yoko Ono.

Track 8: “God Is”

God is opens up with Kanye singing in a hoarse voice. It’s actually quite endearing and makes Kanye’s cry to God sound gritty and real.

It’s finally a song that is longer than 3-minutes.

The sample is from “God is.” You can listen below.

Track 9: “Hands On” feat. Fred Hammond

The song opens with Kanye West talking about him openly being Christian and the pushback that he got from coming out as a follower of Jesus Christ.

It’s the kind of emotionally open Kanye that people enjoyed previously but talking about his faith.

Sounds a lot like his work under

Notable Line: “God Is My Mission.”

Track 10: Use This Gospel feat. Clipse and Kenny G

The beat sounds very reminiscent of the song “Runaway” from My Beautiful Twisted Fantasy with the single note driving a lot of the song.

Great versus from Pusha-T and No Malice. Interesting hearing Pusha-T not rap about cocaine.

Track 11: Jesus Is Lord

It’s a short outro to the album and leads right into song number 1 when played on repeat.

His 2016 album, the Life Of Pablo, was self-described as Gospel music. The first song on the album, Ultralight Beam, had a gospel choir and feel to the song, but it wasn’t absolutely gospel.

West previously released the Album Ye and critics were lukewarm in reception to the album. Similar to that album, many critics are busy attacking Kanye West as a fake Christian on the release of this album. It is interesting to see how the news media has treated the prolific rapper after he pledged his support for President Trump. Many of the people reviewing the album are not Christians and are seemingly casting stones against the rapper because of his political views.

The entire album is incredibly minimal almost to the point of being naked. One of the most memorable songs is Follow God that features a lean soul sample similar to Bound 2 from the album Yeezus. This is followed by another cut featuring Virginia rappers Clipse on Use This Gospel, harkening back to Kanye’s Runaway with a single note driving most of the song. Kenny G is featured on the song with an inspired saxophone solo.

West has spent most of his career following his own path. He walks the road less traveled in Hip Hop and has spectacularly changed the culture of popular music with his antics and albums. Jesus is King feels raw in comparison to previous albums.

Jesus Is King feels like waking up on Sunday morning and getting ready to go to church. It starts groggy but the congregation and the preaching awaken the spirit to the message of Jesus.

West’s goal of breaching the popular music charts with a Christian album have been realized and it is an incredibly raw album that will be played for years to come by both Christian and secular audiences.
